Process Consultation
If you’ve never heard of it before, you’re probably asking yourself:
“Process what? My team and organization are stretched so thin, each of us is has more responsibilities than we can handle. Between meetings and long email exchanges, we barely have time to breathe-our coffees are perpetually cold by the time we take our first sip.”
If done right, process consulting is about allowing you clear up some energy draining components of your work and improve collaboration. Process consulting is used to enhance group effectiveness, shorten meeting times, and address conflict. It helps teams to work together more effectively, saves time, resources and its effects can be long-lasting.
What you can expect from process consulting:
- Shorter meetings.
- More productive meetings.
- Better decisions.
- Increased feelings of participation among all group members.
- Greater satisfaction with the team and respective member roles.
Through process consultatation, we carefully intervene in a group or team to help it to accomplish its goals. I would not try to help the team as an expert in your work; instead, I help your team help itself.
In order to do this my job is to:
- concentrate on the way the team works, rather than what it is working on.
- ask questions instead of offering expert advice.
- help the team solve its own problems.
- be unbiased and listen objectively
- understand group dynamics, conflict resolution, and manager/leadership development.
Process consulting also requires a client who knows (or know in a team context) that things aren’t working as they are and is/are willing to listen and change some habits if needed.
Is it easy? No.
Worth it? Absolutely. The rewards far outweigh the efforts and risks.
