Happy (early) Mothers’ Day

May 5, 2010

StoryCorps was founded by David Isay. Earlier in his career, Isay assembled a collection of poignant radio documentaries called Sound Portraits. He decided he wanted to give everyone an opportunity to record and preserve stories of their own lives. StoryCorps set ups booths around NYC, where anyone can go in and record.

This morning, I heard David Isay talking to Brian Lehrer about his new book, Mom: A Celebration of Mothers from StoryCorps. He mentioned that he had animated a few of the conversations. Brian wasn’t sure how animation would add to these stories and I wasn’t either, until I found this:

Both mother and son are inspirational, but the mom exemplifies the kind of parent I hope to be. She’s honest, reflective, and loving in such a special way. The values she exhibits, particularly her openness and willingness to grow with her kids, are pretty remarkable. The animation shows the pair as they go through life, mom leading and sometimes following her son, but always by his side.
